The birth mother will have 5 different official opportunities to reclaim her child. Adoptions in Guatemala are private; part of the process involves Family Court and the Guatemalan equivalent of the American Attorney General’s Office.
The critical period for us takes place between Family Court and the DNA test required by the American Embassy. The DNA needs to be a match in order for us to proceed. If a birth mother is going to reclaim her child, chances are it will take place during the DNA visit. (Although she has 3 opportunities after DNA to reclaim her child, statistically it is less likely). During the DNA visit, the birth mother is photographed holding her child. If a birth mother is able to change her mind, it will likely be at this point. Like all expecting parents, we will be a bit nervous until we have our child home. Thanks for supporting us through all the unknowns.
