All Kinds of Cleansing Going On

So, my darling took me for a walk this evening to a hilltop in the Baylands where we watched the sunset. He shared with me his strategy for dealing with the frustration of waiting. Tom reminded me of Mayra's birth mother, and the crushing poverty that prevents her from keeping her child, and the countless family members she has probably lost to war in her country. He wasn't saying it to make me feel guilty, just sharing what helps him cope when he is upset that the Director of PGN cannot find it within himself to sign off on cases. And I was reminded how lucky I am in the man I married.

Tom also found this article in the Houston Chronicle:

Mayan priest to purify sacred site after Bush visit

GUATEMALA CITY — Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.

Bush's tour includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche.

Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace.

Of course, now I am wondering if Bush's visit to Guatemala will make it more likely or less likely that the Director of PGN will sign off on files this week . . . but at least I am wondering about this from a better mental state!
